Located just a few blocks
south of 4 mile road
on highway 38 in
Caledonia;
Wow. Just in case you
didn’t hear me the first
time, let me say it again.
Wow. OMG. THIS is a
dog park? With it’s thick
stands of ash and maple
and oak, it’s wide open
prairie, it’s rivers and it’s
quarry pond, Johnson Park
Dog Run looks more like a
wildlife preserve than a dog
park. Bring your camera and your hiking boots. You’ll need them. It’s a
long trek just to get to the park proper. A long wood chip trail leads from
the gravel parking lot to a fork. You can go either way, it’s a loop. The
left leads straight to the quarry pond for your hairy, panting dog who needs
a nice cool swim. The right leads to an open expanse of unmanicured
prairie land and a forested area. Any trail you take in this park leads to a
fun place for you and your dog to explore. One complaint I hear often is
how difficult it is to find this park. It is hard to spot from the road. In
fact, traveling down hwy 38 at 60 miles an hour, if you blink you could miss
it! The picture you see on this page is the sign for the park. It’s fairly
large but it isn’t immediately obvious and the parking lot is a nondescript
strip of white gravel that can be completely empty of cars at times. The
best direction I can give you is: if you’re coming from the north on hwy 38,
Less than a block south of 4 mile road, you can’t see the park from the road
but the park’s parking lot will be on your left. If you’re coming from the
south and you pass 4 mile road, you’ve gone to far.
Good luck have a great time.
